The Horse Pens 40 has been slightly modified to minimize exposure to US 78 on the return to the start. Additionally, the start has been relocated from the Shopping Center on Dunston Avenue to Publix Super Market at Montclair Place!

We will depart from the Publix Super Market at Montclair Place @ 1325 Montclair Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210. Saw's BBQ & Basil Pizza & Bar are less than one mile from the start. These are great places to eat once the ride is done. Horse Pens 40 is a park known as a premier bouldering site in the Southeast. Horse Pens 40 is situated atop Chandler Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Chandler Mountain is the third highest peak in Alabama. The climb up the steep side to Horse Pens 40 is one of the most iconic cycling climbs in Birmingham. The route will take us NE by Buc-ee’s, Leeds High School, to Odenville with a loop through Springville, Horse Pens 40, Steele and Asheville before returning to Odenville for the return trip back to Birmingham. On the way back to the start, the route follows a loop on Old Leeds Road to the Birmingham Zoo area before returning to the Shopping Center.
